pH Level/Caries/Tooth Wear and Acid Erosion

powerade-415710_960_720Acid erosion occurs when acids from foods and drinks soften the surface of the tooth. The enamel can slowly wear away. Over time it can lead to irreversible damage to teeth. Laboratory experiments indicate that tooth enamel can begin to dissolve at a pH level of 5.5. The higher the pH, the better it is for your teeth.

Typical pH ranges of some common foods and drinks are:

  • Sports Drinks 2.3-4.4
  • Soda 2.7-3.5
  • Apple Juice 3.5
  • Salad Dressing 3.6
  • Orange Juice 3.7
  • Water 7.3

Avoid holding acidic foods and drinks in your mouth or sipping drinks over long periods of time. Brush your teeth gently with a soft toothbrush. Do not brush your teeth immediately after consuming acid-rich foods or drinks.
